Seven Social engineering Tips for the Sytem Admins who are going to join in a new team.
Are you a new system admin who is going to join in a new team for your new job? If your answer is yes, certainly this post very much useful for you. Below 7 points that I am discussing here will help you to establish healthy relationship with your new team and also helps you to make your Knowledge Training ( In short K.T.) comfortable and fun-filled.
In this post i am discussing about the non-technical points alone , and I will post another article for technical stuff to be focused during the initial period of new job role.
1.Trying to impress your Boss? just don’t do it
Yes. If you want to have a comfortable job environment you should first win your team’s trust before you start impressing your boss with your work. Please remember every boss respects the team member whom every other team member respects, and during initial stage of your job, your boss only tells you what he is expecting from you , but it is the team who actually helps you to understand the practical challenges that you have to face to meet those expectations.
2. Just forget about your previous job and the way you worked there:
Yes. During initial stage of your new job, if you try to carry your comfort of your old job into new environment then you will obviously end up with a feeling of disappointment although the new job is much better in many ways compared to your old one.
For the first two or three months of your new job, don’t be hurry to compare new job with your past job and proposing changes in new environment, instead you just focus on learning the things as it is now. Once you finish your knowledge training and when you believe that you completely understood the challenges in your new job, you can start proposing your ideas for the improvements in a way that wont criticise the existing procedures.
3. Spend time with your team, but not to judge them as good or bad.
In any job, there are no good and bad kind of people, but there are only professional and unprofessional kind of people. My meaning to unprofessional folks is ”who will take job related conflicts and arguments personally and who let their old emotions towards you influence your work”
If you judge people as good or bad, you always end up with reaching those people whom you thought as good, to help you. During the initial period those good folks might help you for every thing you are asking for, but later they might not be having same level comfort and time to help you. So establish same level of comfortable relation with eachand every team member and approach them for help as and when appropriate.
4. Your expectations on each team member should be based on their comfort instead of your requirement :
During initial stage of your job, don’t expect that every one should help you for every thing because you are a new member. Many professional folks don’t like it, and the more you make them uncomfort the more they will avoid you in future. During personal meetings with each of your team member, you should do little mind work to understand the skill level of each individual and approach the right person when you have right question for them.
5. Be flexible with your timings during the Learning phase in your new job:
If your boss allocated someone to mentor you for your new role, just make yourself more flexible in terms of timings and work, to make your mentor more comfortable to train you.
During the learning, don’t make any such comments that expresses either ’your dislike with any part of the new job role’ or ‘your feeling of superiority over your mentors’ skill in any specific area’ , that will discourage your mentor to train you at his best.
6. Dont try to get appreciation from the day one:
Doesn’t matter how good you performed in your old job, just don’t try to receive same level of appreciation and recognition in your new role, starting from the day one. Every role is unique in it’s own way, and the team need sometime to realise how good you are in your new role. Once you gain team’s respect and trust, the recognition and appreciation will reach you on their own.
7. Identify the areas of learning for your self-improvement, and set your personal goals related them:
When ever we join to a new job, it is always the boss who sets our goals and we work to reach his expectations.In addition to these job related goals, you should also set your personal learning goals that you can achieve by using the resources and technologies available in your new role.
Setting personal goals helps you to keep yourself up-to-date with the industry requirements, and the success in your personal learning goals could open doors for you to get assigned for some challenging tasks for which your boss couldn’t find matching senior resource in the team.
